High Street Lincoln
VolkerGround Engineering was contracted by Marcus Worthington & Co Ltd. to work on the development of an accommodation block for students at the University of Lincoln.
The accommodation is to include 301 high quality en-suite student rooms, spread across two modern blocks, located at 179 High Street, Lincoln.
The scope of work included installation of 193no. 350mm diameter Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles to an average depth of 16m. The piles were installed using a PVE55 CFA rig and split into two phases.
As the construction site was situated adjacent to live services on the Lincoln railway, the VolkerGround Engineering team ensured a member of Network Rail was on site to supervise the works. This guaranteed no parameters were breached that might cause disruption.
In the run up to mobilisation, site restrictions arose that posed challenges for the VolkerGround Engineering team. The size of the entry gates were such that, for the team’s rig to access the site, the rig had to be taken off the low loader on the highway and tracked onto site, using plywood to protect the road surface.
In the second phase of the works the VolkerGround Engineering team revised its choice of rig, choosing a smaller option. This was particularly beneficial as the second phase took place in a tighter area. An additional benefit was that other ground works could continue on site while VolkerGround Engineering’s CFA piling took place.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank VolkerGround Engineering. Under tough circumstances and extreme weather we were able to complete the piling process without any problems. Hopefully we will be working with VolkerGround Engineering again soon.”
