Meridian Water Station
In 2017 VolkerFitzpatrick (Rail) was awarded a contract to design and construct Network Rail’s new Meridian Water train station. The station is part of London’s major ‘Meridian Water’ regeneration programme and is expected to accommodate up to four million passengers over the next 20 years. This new station will eventually replace Angel Road station in Edmonton, London.
VolkerGround Engineering’s subcontract was for the design and installation of 600mm and 406mm diameter continuous flight auger and driven tubular piles, installed using a multi-purpose ABI piling rig, to provide support to the new railway station on the West Anglian Main Line.
One of the greatest challenges on this project was to overcome the inherent issues faced with installing concrete in ground contaminated with Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (NAPL). This was overcome by installing steel tubes to protect the concrete – enabling it to cure.
VolkerGround Engineering worked closely with VolkerFitzpatrick (Rail) to provide an integrated piling solution, using internal piling equipment which offered programme and commercial savings.
Commenting on the work at Meridian Water the client said: “VolkerGround Engineering worked well on the Meridian Water project, and the work was executed in a professional manner. We had to make a few changes to the piling programme due to third party issues, which VolkerGround Engineering reacted well to and with little fuss.
“Working on the rail network meant there were some challenges ensuring specialist operatives were always available with the right PTS / ICI competencies, often at short notice. VolkerGround Engineering was quick to resolve these challenges ensuring any risk to the programme was fully mitigated.”
