CFA piling at Hornsey

In a first for the company, VolkerGround Engineering has completed a concrete bored piling contract at Thameslink’s Hornsey maintenance rail depot.

VolkerGround Engineering was appointed to complete concrete bored piling works by sister company VolkerFitzpatrick, after working closely with its project management team to develop a solution for bearing piles on the structure.

The team completed 290, 600mm and 450mm bored piles to a maximum 20m depth. This was a challenging project as the piling team was required to work within an active rail environment and adjacent to an existing maintenance facility, clad with asbestos sheeting. In addition, site access was also restricted for concrete deliveries, meaning the team had to ensure minimal disruption to the facility and that existing emergency walkways were maintained at all times. A close working relationship with VolkerFitzpatrick ensured all challenges were met and work was completed successfully and to the agreed programme schedule.

“This was the first time we have worked on a project of this kind with VolkerFitzpatrick and we are delighted with the results achieved, and the quality of work throughout the project.”
