VolkerStevin team building and outward-bound course - A memorable adventure

Earlier this year Karl Hansson, VolkerStevin Commercial Manager took some of our graduates and trainees to the Lake District to take part in an outdoor activity training course that would help develop their team building skills and personal growth. Read Karl’s blog below on the great adventures had by the group.

In the heart of the Lake District, against the backdrop of Coniston’s rugged beauty, a group of 50 enthusiastic graduates and trainees from all over the country and across the VolkerStevin business embarked on an exhilarating journey. From April 15th -17th, they participated in a team-building and outward bounds course that combined adrenaline-pumping activities with personal growth and camaraderie.

The venue - Coniston

A scenic village in the Lake District, lies in the Westmorland and Furness district of Cumbria, England. Nestled beside Coniston Water, the third longest lake in the Lake District, Coniston offers a rich history of copper and slate mining, picturesque landscapes, and notable landmarks. The dramatic silhouette of The Old Man of Coniston rises behind the village, providing a stunning backdrop which all provided the perfect venue for the course.

Activities

Team building challenges

The heart of the course lay in team-building exercises. Participants collaborated on problem-solving tasks, communication challenges, and trust-building activities. These experiences fostered stronger bonds among the graduates and trainees, transcending professional roles and forging lasting friendships. The team building ultimately ended up with the teams spending their hard earned VolkerStevin dollars from the day’s activities to purchase materials to build rafts, which they would put to the test in a final race. The worthy winners would be rewarded at the evening prize giving.

Rock climbing and abseiling

Participants scaled sheer rock faces, their fingers gripping the rough edges as they conquered heights. The thrill of reaching the summit was matched only by the sense of achievement and the panoramic vistas that unfolded before them.

Descending down cliffs with ropes, the participants faced their fears head-on. The rush of adrenaline as they leaned back into the void was both exhilarating and empowering.

Gully scrambling

Navigating through narrow gorges, the group waded through and jumped into icy water, clambered over boulders scrambled up cliffs and waterfalls. Gully scrambling tested their agility, teamwork, and determination.

High Points Outdoor Education and Training Ltd.

The activities were expertly delivered by High Points Outdoor Education and Training Ltd., renowned for their outdoor experiences. Their skilled instructors ensured safety while encouraging participants to push their limits. High Points emphasised not only physical skills but also resilience, adaptability, and leadership. All activities were designed and mindful of the VolkerStevin Way which featured and was exemplified throughout the course.

The overnight stay: YHA Coppermine Valley

After a day of adventure, the group retreated to the picturesque YHA Coppermine Valley. Nestled amidst the hills, this charming hostel provided a cozy haven. Here, all attendees took charge of their evening meals, cooking together sharing stories of the day and getting to know each other. The communal spirit extended to fun activities, including a quiz and a prize giving ceremony.

Conclusion

As the sun dipped below the Coniston fells, tired but elated, the graduates and trainees reflected on their achievements. They had conquered nature’s obstacles, supported one another, and discovered newfound strengths. The course wasn’t just about climbing rocks or scrambling through gullies—it was about growth, camaraderie, and the thrill of overcoming challenges together.

Here are what some of the graduates and trainees said about the course:

  • ‘The course allowed newer/younger members of the business to meet people who they may not have otherwise met.’
  • ‘All of the activities were enjoyable, plus they promoted teamwork and camaraderie.’
  • ‘Well organised and structured. Great for getting to know new people from the business. Everyone got on well and communicated well. The activities pushed us all as a team and brought our team together when facing adversity. Karl's quiz brought people together well and was a good laugh.’

‘Overall it was a great experience and was much better than anticipated. I would love to do it again!’
