Primary school children sat around a table painting

VolkerStevin donates art materials to local primary school

The VolkerStevin team working on the Appleby Flood Risk Management Scheme recently donated art materials to a primary school local to the project.

VolkerStevin is currently working on behalf on the Environment Agency to reduce risk from surcharging of the Doomgate culvert, through upgrades and the installation of a new pumping station.

Appleby Primary School students used the donated materials to create their own interpretations of wildlife they have seen along the River Eden. When speaking with the children they mentioned that they had been lucky enough to see the animals they were painting, some of which include red squirrels, otters and crayfish. The artwork is set to be displayed along the river, where the flood risk management scheme is being constructed.

The young artists, from year six, are also decorating wooden designs of trout, swans, beetles, and rabbits. A selection of these pieces will be displayed around the play area next to the river.

Terry Caygill, deputy head and year six teacher, said: "It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to be able to celebrate the wildlife we see in our town, and have it displayed for everyone to see.

"It is amazing how many of these animals the children have seen, and many regularly when in the town."

“This was a great opportunity, to not only celebrate the biodiversity of the area, but to also connect with local residents. “The team are working hard to better protect the community, upon completion the scheme will provide improved flood protection to 64 properties and infrastructure, including road access to homes and businesses. “We look forward to seeing the outdoor art exhibition in spring, when the scheme is due to be completed.”
