Kendal children dive into construction world at Outside In's new play area
Children in Kendal are getting a taste of the construction world, all thanks to a donation of construction toys from the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme team, the Environment Agency and contractor Waitings.
The generous donations have helped Outside In, a local charity, create a hands-on construction-themed play area for children to explore and learn.
Open seven days a week, Outside In is already well-known for its innovative indoor play areas, including a mini market town with shops, a café, and a soft play area styled after Kendal Castle. But now, the charity has added a new attraction: The Kendal Little Construction Room. The interactive space features toy diggers, cranes, trucks, and a magnetic wall, where young builders can don mini hi-vis safety wear and let their imaginations run wild.
The grand opening of The Kendal Little Construction Room was a memorable event, with two-year-old Eben Martin and his mother, Jane, cutting the ribbon to mark the occasion.
“Partnering with Outside In has been a fantastic opportunity. This charity, supported by a passionate community of parents and volunteers, is making a real difference for children and families in Kendal and beyond. By adding a construction-themed play area, we’re helping create a space where children can learn, explore, and have fun in a safe environment. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the joy it brings."

Outside In has a tremendous impact in Kendal, offering both free and affordable play sessions for families. We’re proud to be part of this new initiative."
Andrew Nixon, Outside In's Play Centre Manager, added: “This is amazing opportunity to make new connections, and help provided a great play space for the children and information about the ongoing flood defences.”
Each year, Outside In welcomes over 21,000 visitors, making a significant positive impact on the lives of children and families across South Lakes.
