Southsea's Frontage 3 stepped revetment completed

We're excited to announce the completion of a crucial development along Southsea Common’s coastline - the stepped revetment on Frontage 3 is now finished.

This marks a major achievement in the continued efforts to protect and enhance Southsea’s beautiful coastline.

The newly completed revetment is designed to bolster Southsea's resilience against coastal erosion while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The project involved innovative engineering techniques and materials to ensure the area is better protected.

VolkerGround Engineering carried out toe piling, providing strong support for the pre-cast step revetment units. A total of 84 robust units were installed in the Western revetment, with each unit weighing approximately 7 tonnes.

The work doesn’t stop here. A smaller revetment will be added in the stretch between The Beach Club and Southsea Rowing Club. This additional structure will consist of 19 units, further strengthening the coastline.

Looking ahead, the team are preparing for the next phase of the project. In May, the team will conduct beach nourishment, which aims to replenish the beach and further protect the area from coastal erosion. Rather than using traditional land-based transport, a dredging vessel will bring in bulk shingle directly from the seabed. This innovative technique involves pumping the shingle directly onto the beach, making the process more efficient and eco-friendly.

The completion of the stepped revetment and upcoming beach nourishment are exciting steps in ensuring that Southsea's coastline remains a beautiful, safe place for both residents and visitors. These efforts are a part of our long-term commitment to preserving the coastline for future generations, providing both environmental protection and a stunning setting for all to enjoy.
