Retired naval engineers take a tour of Southsea’s Coastal Scheme
A group of retired naval engineers, ‘The Grumpy Old Engineers’, traded their sea legs for a chance to dive into the world of coastal engineering at the Southsea Coastal Scheme.

Despite their name, there were no grumbles here—only smiles and fascination as they explored the Southsea Coastal Scheme!
The day kicked off with an engaging presentation from the site team, offering the engineers a look into the ambitious project that will protect the coastline and reduce flood risk to more than 10,000 properties.
The group were then taken on a guided tour along Frontages 4 and 5 of the site. As they walked along the seafront they were treated to detailed explanations of the state-of-the-art flood defences and the innovative techniques being used to safeguard the area.
‘The Grumpy Old Engineers’ left Southsea with a new-found appreciation for the project, with admiration for the cutting-edge work being. An unforgettable day for all involved!
The Southsea Coastal Scheme team also had the pleasure of hosting six geography teachers from Bohunt School near Petersfield. The group was on an inset day, updating their GCSE and A Level curriculum, and sought to incorporate the Southsea Coastal Scheme into their lessons.
The team had the opportunity to meet with the teachers and provide them with in-depth insights into the scheme’s key features. The coastal project is having a big impact on environmental education, and it's great to see it being added to local school lessons.
The visit was a great way to connect with educators and support the next generation of geographers in exploring this dynamic and ever-evolving coastal scheme!
