Our team working on the New Wear Footbridge has started the deck panel placement, marking the start of the next major milestone in this project.
A total of 91 precast concrete panels, each 10 metres wide, will form the bridge deck. The panels are being installed north to south using a bespoke trolley system, designed specifically for this project. Each panel is lifted by crane from the southern riverside park onto the deck trolley, which then transports and positions it with precision before returning for the next. Once in place, each panel is stitched to its neighbour using in-situ concrete to create a seamless deck.
Once all the panels are in position, the final deck finishes can begin.
The New Wear Footbridge is a key part of Riverside Sunderland, connecting the north and south sides of the river. It’s one of more than £1bn worth of development projects currently transforming the area.
