VolkerGround Engineering was awarded a contract by Kier Construction, to provide sheet piling works as part of a redevelopment project in the heart of Mayfair, London.

The substructure works included 305m2 of perimeter and foundation piling, to enable the demolition of an existing building and the subsequent construction of a new five-storey building, comprising of office and commercial space.

Our experienced in-house design team worked closely with the client and the on-site operations team to alleviate the many challenges this project presented.

Our solution to overcome the extremely tight working area, party walls shared on three sides, and the close proximity of Victorian sewers, included pre-augering in front of the sheet pile line to reduce soil friction. This also helped the team locate obstructions in advance of the sheet pile installation.

The team utilised a MOVAX  to pitch the piles and a silent press for the installation. This solution was chosen to overcome the restricted access, caused by the overhead steel works supporting the adjacent façade, and to minimise noise and vibration.

Our design included temporary propping to reduce pile head deflection and to minimise movement in the soil and sewers during installation.
