Port of Felixstowe, Berth 9

Between 2012 and 2015, VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerStevin completed expansion works at the Port of Felixstowe. The VolkerFitzpatrick team delivered a new third rail terminal, to meet the Port’s growing transport demands. VolkerStevin (as part of VSBW, a joint venture with Boskalis Westminster) extended the berth by 190 metres.

In 2018, the next phase of expansion works on berth 9 began, enhancing the Port’s ability to handle the world’s largest container ships.

This phase was a joint venture between VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerStevin. VolkerFitzpatrick delivered the design and construction of approximately 13 hectares of paved container yard, directly behind berth 9.

VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerStevin worked closely to reclaim 3.2 hectares of seabed behind the existing finger pier.

The new container yard will comprise ten container storage blocks and allow six-high stacking, further enhancing Felixstowe’s ability to handle the world’s largest container ships.

VolkerGround Engineering was awarded a £30,000 contract as part of these new works. The team’s contribution to the Felixstowe project included the installation of a 302m2 temporary sheet pile anchor wall, using a 35-tonne SG75 Movax complete with 700 M hammer.

In order to ensure a perfectly straight pile line, the VolkerGround Engineering team incorporated a steel beam at ground level that reduced movements whilst driving.

VolkerGround Engineering worked closely with the client on this project to ensure there were no technical difficulties that could delay the programme.

The team worked on the client’s critical path and put additional hours of work into the project to allow handover of the works ahead of schedule.

VolkerGround Engineering’s works on the Felixstowe project ended in August 2018, with the new container yard scheduled for completion in early 2019.
