VolkerGround Engineering was employed by Interserve to design and install Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) bearing piles and contiguous bored pile walls at the new £24m Integrated Health Centre at Cardigan Bay, Wales.
The initial design was for rotary bored piling due to the difficult ground conditions, which comprised of glacial boulder clay. Our pre-construction team identified that a more costeffective combined CFA/rotary method would be more suitable. The client agreed to this approach on a target cost basis.
As such, we selected our new dual-purpose SR-95 for its quick reconfiguration (rotary to CFA) capability and a 50-tonne telescopic crawler crane.
We were able to complete the piling works using only CFA method. Our flexible approach and value engineered solution provided the client with a 30% saving off the original programme period.

The new Integrated Health Centre is due to open at the end of 2019. With an increased range of services and easier access for Cardigan residents, the new centre will offer an updated, modernised health and social care service.
