Work progresses at our Rother Tidal Walls – East project
The Rother Tidal Walls – East project will reduce coastal flood risk to homes and businesses in Rye, East Sussex.
The team are working to improve the flood defences on the eastern bank of the River Rother, on behalf of the Environment Agency. The scope of work includes raising the existing flood embankment, refurbishment of the union channel and the construction of a new flood defence wall.
The team are currently continuing earthworks across site, with all of the required excavation complete. Clay importation to the site has finished and the team are now focused on finishing works in both the north and south of the project.
The structure work at Union Pumping Station is well underway, with the demolition of existing flood walls, in preparation for construction of four new walls with increased flood defence height.
The two pre-existing walls have been demolished and have been replaced with two new ones, built at a greater height and with larger foundations to cope with the additional weight of the water. The walls tie the earthworks into the Pumping Station, which will provide a continuous flood barrier. The new walls are constructed from reinforced concrete and will sit upon 7.5m long sheet piles installed by VolkerGround Engineering.
