VolkerGround Engineering awarded new work on Manchester Metrolink

As part of its continued engagement with the Manchester Metrolink Project, VolkerGround Engineering has commenced work on a 123m long steel sheet pile retaining wall in south Manchester.

When complete, the retaining wall will provide support to the adjacent residential area.  This will enable the excavation of the surrounding area and subsequent construction of the light rail permanent way into the terminal area of Manchester Airport, as part of the Metrolink scheme's airport line extension.

The close proximity of the new infrastructure to the adjoining residential properties has meant that the ground has been pre-augered through stiff clays. This is to ensure minimal noise and vibration to the surrounding properties during the pile installation works.

This section of work is the latest in a number of infrastructure projects that have been completed on the Manchester Metrolink project by VolkerGround Engineering for joint venture client, M-Pact Thales consortium (MPT).

As a Preston based specialist in foundation engineering and all forms of driven piling, the company's history of infrastructure contracts has made it the contractor of choice, having already worked on a variety of geotechnical solutions in inner city locations and under tight deadlines.

Chris Thomas, director of VolkerGround Engineering, commented: "The site presented some challenges as it was within the flight path zone of Manchester Airport and adjacent to properties on Carsdale Road and Shadowmoss Road in south Manchester. However, our experience of similar challenging geotechnical projects meant we were able to bring our experience to this section of the line.
