Rochdale and Littleborough FRMS awarded an International Green Apple Environment Award
Phase 1b of our Rochdale and Littleborough Flood Risk Management Scheme (FRMS) has won an International Green Apple Environment Award. The awards recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice from around the world.
Phase 1b of the scheme focuses on the creation of a flood storage reservoir, constructing sections of linear defences both upstream and downstream of the reservoir and carrying out modifications to existing defences along the River Roch, Greenvale Brook and Ealees Brook.
Throughout the project the team has been dedicated to creating environmental improvements, contributing to the Environment Agency’s environmental, carbon and sustainability objectives. The team has used several sustainable, low carbon initiatives across the project, including:
- The use of EcoSheetPile Plus rather than conventional sheet piles.
- The purchase of 800,000 litres of sustainably sourced Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, to help move away from the use of diesel.
- Reused concrete, created from the removal of two old bridges, to form part of the haul road at phase 1b.
- The use of hybrid excavators to carry out work on site, resulting in 25% less fuel usage than a standard, fuel powered excavator.
The team are looking forward to attending the presentation ceremony later this year at Kensington Palace.
