New Wear high-level Footbridge project team inspire the next generation

Our team on the New Wear high-level Footbridge recently visited two local schools, Fulwell Junior School and Hastings Hill Academy, to speak to students about careers in construction and the works being carried out on the project.

Harry McLaughlin, graduate engineer and Amelia McVay, trainee quantity surveyor gave a careers talk to 360 children over two interactive sessions at Fulwell Junior School.

During the talk Harry and Amelia gave an overview of their roles, how they got into them and the skills they need to do their job, as well as their career aspirations. The children had lots of questions for the team, with some of the children getting to see how they look in construction workwear by trying on PPE.

“Giving careers presentations on construction is vital for inspiring young minds, it helps open their eyes to the exciting possibilities in our field. When I was a student, hearing from professionals ignited my passion and showed me how diverse and impactful a career in construction could be. By sharing our experiences, we can help children dream big and realise that they can build the future!”

Senior site engineers Tyler Howarth and Lee Andersen gave children at Hastings Hill Academy a presentation on the New Wear Footbridge project with an additional focus on the construction of other bridges around the world.

The team then set the children a building challenge with prizes given for their efforts in categories such as 'innovation', 'problem-solving', 'creativity', 'most improved', 'best teamwork'

It was great to see young minds so interested in the project and construction, hopefully the team has inspired some future engineers!
