Glass panel installation marks major milestone at Preston & South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme
VolkerStevin has reached a significant milestone on the Preston & South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme with the successful installation of the first glass panels, a key feature of this flood defence project.
This multi-million-pound initiative, led by the Environment Agency and delivered by VolkerStevin, will better protect homes, schools, and businesses along the River Ribble from flooding. In addition to safeguarding communities, the scheme will also improve the local environment and community amenities.
The newly installed glass panels are a striking feature of the flood wall at Miller Gardens and extend along Riverside towards the gas pipe bridge. Each panel weighs 200kg and boasts a robust 33mm thickness, combining two layers of 12mm Enhanced Safety Glass, two layers of 1.52mm Poly Vinyl Butyral (PVB), and an additional layer of 6mm Enhanced Safety Glass for added durability.
One of the standout benefits of these panels is the self-cleaning technology. The glass reacts with natural daylight to break down organic dirt, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals or frequent manual cleaning. As the dirt is loosened, the coating helps rainwater evenly spread across the surface, washing the grime away and ensuring a clear, uninterrupted view of the riverside for local residents and visitors.
This installation marks a key moment in the ongoing development of the flood risk management scheme, which is set to deliver long-term protection for the area’s residents and improve the surrounding environment.
