Work progresses at Hornsea 3

Work is progressing well at Hornsea 3 with the cable pulling operation well underway. The team has so far successfully installed 24 cable drums, with a further 208 to be installed.

The team are pulling each 50 tonne cable reel at only two tonnes pulling force, however the cable has a max allowable pulling tension of 20 tonnes! Demonstrating the quality of the cable conduit installation.

The aerial footage shows VolkerTrenchless Solutions’s 100t drilling rig at its third Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) site. This rig has completed two out of four complex drills whilst our 60t rated rig has completed 11 out of 13 complex drilling scopes. Current progress has us complete on 17,487 of the 23,356 meters of complex drilling and duct installations, delivered safely along the cable route in Norfolk.

On the noncomplex HDD, a total of 71 drills has been scoped. The team has now completed more than 26 drills safely. This amounts to a total drilling distance of 10,148 meters of noncomplex drilling for the main 250mm SDR11 ducts and the SDR9 90mm fibre optic ducts for these drills.

Cabling works are being carried out on behalf of Ørsted, one of the world’s leading sustainable energy companies. The project, which is being delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick supported by VolkerStevin and VolkerTrenchless Solutions, will see the delivery of a 52km stretch of dual circuit DC cable.
