Progress continues on the New Wear Footbridge as parapet installation begins

‏‏‎Construction on the New Wear Footbridge is progressing well, with another key activity now underway. Following the successful completion of the deck, the temporary works have been removed and installation of the bridge’s bespoke parapet system has begun.

Made from stainless steel, the parapets will form the handrails and safety barriers, while also incorporating integrated lighting to enhance both safety and visual impact.

While the parapet system is a significant element of the structure, a substantial programme of work remains. This includes the installation of the waterproofing layer, followed by the paving, deck furniture, and internal bridge drainage – each requiring coordination between specialist teams.

Elsewhere on site, groundworks around the substructures are ongoing, and M&E sub-contractor Opus has mobilised to begin installation of the bridge lighting and electrical systems.

The bridge is part of Sunderland’s ambitious Riverside Sunderland regeneration, and will ultimately improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists between the city centre and the Sheepfolds neighbourhood.
