HMNB Devonport, located in Plymouth, is the largest naval base in Western Europe, with a history of supporting the Royal Navy since 1691. Over the next decade, Babcock, as the owner of the Devonport Royal Dockyard, will be leading a series of major infrastructure projects aimed at redeveloping the Dockyard. This programme of work is to deliver the extensive upgrades needed to maintain state-of-the-art facilities that meet the evolving needs of the UK’s Royal Navy.

This is currently the UK's most critical defence infrastructure project. The VolkerStevin team has supported Babcock with the extensive regeneration project of 9 dock. This included maintenance, life extension and facility improvements, delivering the most significant package of infrastructure work on the dock since the early 2000s.

The UK Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle attended site in September and officially re-opened 9 Dock, allowing Devonport Royal Dockyard to continue to support the MOD and keep the UK nuclear deterrent operational.

Speaking at the ceremony, Maria Eagle said: “I am honoured to open 9 Dock, and to have the opportunity to speak with personnel and staff on their vital contribution to our nation’s security”.

“This is such an important project to be a part of and the team should be proud of what they have achieved. It’s a testament to their hard work and collaborative approach with all the key teams involved.”

The dock will receive the next Vanguard Class submarine, which is critical in supporting the UK’s Continuous at Sea Deterrent and securing the long-term defence of the nation.
